So, if you don’t know already, my PHILxxx series is a series of mixes I do as and when I feel like doing one. There’s no structure, they’re not exactly top class, but I enjoy doing it and it gets me practicing. Last year I thought of recording them so I could listen to them back and start understanding what I did well and what I did badly.
Call it public self-critique if you will.
You may notice that this is also the 13th in the series. That’s because this blog didn’t exist before about a month ago and I started recording mixes nigh on a year ago now.
Anyway enough waffling, here’s the mix:
Disco house was this mix’s theme. Earlier this summer I attended a birthday party in which I was meant to DJ, however we lacked a critical piece of infrastructure to make this happen: RCA cables. So all the tracks I had bought the week prior were sitting on my harddrive with nowhere to go. So, I thought I might as well record another mix to make use of these tracks.
what disco house means to me
So I haven’t seen too much disco house out and about lately. It had a bit of a craze in 2015-2018 and this was when I got into the scene properly. Retrojam was one of the hottest nights out in Southampton where I studied and on one fateful evening, I went.
Since then, I’ve been fostering this obsession with electronic music and that night was the starting point that led to this blog being formed.
And now I can’t shake this adoration of disco house.
It’s the perfect people pleaser, the floor filler, the ideal mix of energetic and fun that few can really dislike. True, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I still like it and it’s also a lot of fun to mix.
