Phil's Finds - Feb 2024
Another month, another round up of what I’ve been listening to!
Got quite a bumper list of tracks this month so will dash through my highlights quickly.
Tracks
Kicking off with an energetic house track is Dominator by Danny Bond and Human Resource. Infectiously groovy it’s a real groover. Came across this one on TikTok from a clip of a set from one of the Australian festivals that happened recently. Unfortunately I no longer have that video which is a shame. Song is great though.
With similar powerful energy we have To Da Beat by Temper from yet another lost TikTok video I came across a few weeks ago.
A lower key track I received as a recommendation from a friend comes in next. Gueto de Gent by Phillipi & Rodrigo is a Portuguese bopper with an addictive bassline.
Shygirl and Boys Noize’s newest track tell me is an emotional journey with a delightful drop. I can foresee myself hearing this a lot in the upcoming festival season. Glastonbury 2024 here we go!
Phillippa is back in this month’s roundup with her remix of The Night by Roach Motel. It has this deep jazzy groove to it that would have me in a trance on the dancefloor.
Alen Skanner was a new find for me this month and I would describe his sound as heavy italo house. With a deep rhythmic italo bassline and the classic 4-to-the-floor drum beat, it’s my favourite kind of house and his remix of Your Last Everything by Soft Crash and Marie Davidson is the perfect encapsulation of that.
Mall Grab and Effy’s latest track is iluv and I cannot overstate my adoration for it. The moment that synth kicks in in the build up to the drop has my hands in the air already. Fingers crossed they have a b2b at some point this summer.
I went on a bit of a melodic techno binge after hearing Tinlicker’s latest album (more below) and I came across this hypnotic masterpiece by Argy. Tataki’s deep and bouncy bassline winds its way through your ears and around your brain. This kind of music calls for the largest warehouse you can find.
Last month was a hard house month for me if that wasn’t obvious for my adoration of Marlon Hoffstadt. Well his best pal Malugi has a new track out this month, Drop It Down, and I can’t get enough of its positive and energetic rhythm.
Amtrac’s Feedback is a late night drive soundtrack must have. Dreamy vocals on its delightfully simple bassline is built for the drive home.
I came across the Emotional Dance Spotify playlist and discovered Live You Down by Svidden and it is the perfect accompaniment to Amtrac.
Vintage Culture is a favourite amongst my friends and I and his remix of Home by Camelphat and RHODES has an incredible drop designed for a venue like Drumsheds. Listening to this on a quiet Sunday as I write this post has me missing the rave again.
The Australians have a knack for the electronic and it’s murph has the goods with his track Youthful Kids. Stutter house is all the storm right now and Youthful Kids is a masterpiece of it.
Jumping over to Soundcloud quickly, we have JAXS’ Endless and is the first acid house track I’ve featured in my posts. Squelchy.
Albums
I talked a bit above about Tinlicker’s freshest album, Cold Enough For Snow, and I can only recommend listening to this while watching the sunset. I’m calling out Glasshouse with Julia Church as my favourite track in the album with its stunning emotional rise and the way it makes me feel like I’m floating. And if you want more energy, Blowfish is a heavy stomper that starts with a deceptively relaxing pad. I’ve heard people call this genre “melodic techno” and this is one of those tracks that fits that name. Give the album a listen, it's wonderful.
Wandering away from electronic music for once, WELCOME HOME, KID! by Jordan Mackampa is a fantastic jazz rap album perfect for kitchen listening. Wanted to call this whole album out as I love it so much. STEP BY STEP is without a doubt my favourite of the album. So much fun.
Sets
The first set I want to talk about this week is a live one! wev at Elsewhere Hall in Brooklyn is wonderfully housey. He throws in an insane remix of Cowboy Bebop just after the 1:03:00 mark. There’s no other way of saying this but I need that remix. Give it a whole listen to, it had me dancing at my desk.
SWIM is killing it right now releasing banger after banger. So when another friend sent over his HÖR set 2023, I had to give it a listen. A dreamy hour of house. At the 26 minute mark he brings in a wicked remix of Move Your Feet by Junior Senior.
Playlist
And, finally, as always, here’s the full Spotify playlist.
